About Paula Bowne

Hello, I am Paula, owner and stylist of Lake Road Living. My husband, David (wind beneath my wings!) and I moved here from Texas several years ago. I am stepmom to a wonderful and talented young lady, Maci, and dog mom to two awesome schnauzers, Sako and Remy.  When David took a job in this area, I will admit, I was skeptical at first, it gets cold here y’all! However, it didn’t take long for us to fall in love with New England, from the magical landscapes to the wonderful community of people.

My career had been in the legal field as a paralegal, yet I had always dreamt of owning my own little shop. My husband and I were married in Martha’s Vineyard, such a beautiful and magical place! The towns are filled with quaint storefronts....all so enchanting and so my dream began to take shape.

As we settled into New England life, my idea for Lake Road Living came to life.  The Sturbridge area captures the heart of New England living and I wanted to offer our community a place to shop for well-made clothing, unique styles, while also featuring some of our local talent for jewelry, skincare and gifts. I knew it was time to take that leap of faith once the iconic Lincoln House became available.

The Lincoln House

The Levi Lincoln House was built in Worcester, MA in 1836 by Governor Levi Lincoln, Jr.  He originally built the stately Greek Revival mansion as his family home. Lincoln was a lawyer and politician who served as Governor of Massachusetts (1825-1834).   In 1950 the home was rescued by Old Sturbridge Village.   The home was placed along Route 20, near the entrance to the museum where it remains located to this day.

In its new location, it was first opened as a restaurant.  In the shop we have one of the original restaurant menus!  Later the home became a fabric shop and then home to Country Curtains from 1982 - 2017.  Lake Road Living proudly opened its doors in March 2020 (at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic).  Not the grand opening we imagined, however, with the help of community, LRL reopened its doors in June 2020.  We occupy the bottom right-hand side of the home.  The other side will be occupied by a home décor store.

Lake Road Living is honored to begin its journey in the beautiful Lincoln House and we look forward to offering great clothing and featuring local artisan wares for our community, visitors and online shoppers to enjoy!
